Tire sizes vs rim size to increase ground clearance

Hi I have a 2021 Cyber Orange BL non SAS. My question ( don't laugh at my ignorance please) is this I have 33 inch BFG AT on 17 rims, I absolutely love the setup. The Horse goes anywhere I ask it from mud to rocks, snow/ice. No sand yet. I find that I hit the crash plates periodically. I want to increase ground clearance while keeping suspension as stock as possible. Can I just use the same tire size with a 20 inch rim such as a 285/70/r20?

Tire size you propose is almost a 36”, you can search the internet for that. Its unlikely to fit on your rig and allow full range ( at least without a lift and removing crash bars). Some others have fit 35” tires on stock BL, but you should consider talking to a local shop if you want to do anything other than the stock setup.

Search Tire Size Calculator.
You can input your current setup, and compare to upsizing.
I would increase Tire Dimensions on stock rim. Cheapest route.
You can generally raise clearance about an inch or two.

Thank you for input, I can do the math as far as gear ratios and such but I can't visualize the setup. I'm thinking a larger rim with a similar size to a 285/70r. Is that completely wrong

lager rim doesn't change tire diameter.
for more ground clearance you need lager tire diameter and imo 17 inch wheels are much better offroad than 20's

For those curious.... 285/70r20 means the following:
  • 20" wheel
  • 285mm width
  • Sidewall height is 70% of the width
So if you do the math on it...

(2 * 285 * 70)/(10 * 2.54 * 100) + 20 = 35.7"

Basically converting millimeters to inches, and then figuring out what 70% of that is. That gives you the sidewall size. Double the sidewall size and adding on the wheel diameter gives you the tire diameter.

Always remember that changing tire size affects a lot of things. Speedometer, braking, etc.

Thank you there are so many options to choose from it gets overwhelming . I think I m going to go with 315/70/17. What would minimum lift be for that size? I'm thinking 2". And I don't want them to poke so what would be the offset?

I believe the stock offset is +50.
315 (12.5" wide) is going to be about an inch wider than 285's (11.5" wide)
If you want no poke and 35"'s, you would need to go with a 285/80/17
35's need a 2" lift for no rubbing with suspension compressed and full turn and removal of the crash bars.
35's will fit without a lift (but with removal of the crash bars), but you will have rubbing at full compression and at full turn

Yeah @Norderwurm is correct.

315/70r17 is the exact same thing as Sasquatch package. A 315mm tire is obviously wider than a 285mm tire, hence why the Sasquatch fender flares are wider than the non-Sas flares.

So... if you want to minimize the poke you'll probably are looking at a 1" lift with 285/75r17 or at 2" lift with 285/80r17 tires. You might be to get away with 285/80r17 with only a 1" lift honestly... but if you are sticking with the factory +55 offset... not sure if a 1" lift will be enough alone. My hunch says "yes", but you'd have to try it to be sure.
