MY22 2.3L Turbo Failures - P25B4-C

Anyone else here in the same boat as I am?

Noticing a few others on B6G and Ranger5g with new MY22 Broncos throwing a P25B4-C code for a stuck wastegate, then cutting boost nearly in half.

Mine's done it twice in 400 miles since new, with the first actually on the drive home from the selling dealer.

Seems the solution is to replace the turbo in its entirety, but the turbo's on national backorder, and no ETA from FoMoCo or dealer...

Ugh. They can’t just replace/ repair the waste gate? That sucks I’m getting the 2.3l. Well I guess it is better than the folks that have the 2.7 and dropped valves. New turbo is better than new motor.

Don't think so - some on Ranger5g had tried that but wound up back at square one.

Ford has a service bulletin out on the matter and even its solution is to just replace the turbo outright.

You are correct; new turbo is better than new motor. The silver lining on mine, anyway, is it'll behave itself for 2 weeks, throw the code for a few days and act up, then behave again. I can ride that cycle out until a turbo arrives...

Both 2 3l with the waste gate issue and the 2.7l with the valve issue seems to be a small percentage. At least there's a build date range on the 2.7l failures for comparison, all built last summer of 21'. My bronco was a 3/11/22 build and my 2.7l was built 3/1/22, so if you're still waiting on your bronco, your 2.7l engine would have been built months after the range of troubled 2.7l were built. No idea on the build dates of the 2.3l with turbo issues.

Well I took delivery of my 4dr Sas Mid DB 2.7L Dec 10 2021 (built the week of Nov 22) and I have put 6k on it in various conditions and for those interested the electronic governor is set at 101. I have had it there twice.

I let Ford do their 100 dollar oil change and tire rotation at 5k .

My point is I must be lucky because it seems like the only gremlin I might have is in the dual zone climate control acting a little odd.

Really seems to be limited to a recent batch of MY22 Broncos and Rangers.
Anecdotally speaking, it seems as if it hasn't flared up within the first couple hundred miles, you're probably good.
My uncle just took delivery of a Ranger built three weeks after my Bronco, and has logged similar mileage to me without issue.

Just hoping our backorder situation doesn't drag on forever...

I hate automatic climate control in every vehicle I've driven. Thank goodness it's optional on broncos.

I remember reading on the 2.0 echoboost they need to replace the entire head manifold assembly to replace the turbo. Is this true on the 2.3 or can they replace just the turbo?

No idea. I have only heard of instances of turbo replacement a la carte, so I suspect they can do as much.

Sounds like SSM 50171

I’ve seen this on a Ranger and two Edges. Definitely rare.

Eh... I may have lied. Bronco isn't listed in the TSB.

SSM 50171 - 2019-2021 Edge/Nautilus/Ranger, 2020-2021
Escape/Corsair/Explorer, 2021 Bronco Sport - 2.0L/2.3L EcoBoost - Lack Of
Power With Illuminated MIL - Various DTCs

Some 2019-2021 Edge/Nautilus/Ranger, 2020-2021 Escape/Corsair/Explorer, and 2021 Bronco
Sport vehicles equipped with a 2.0L/2.3L EcoBoost may exhibit a lack of power with an illuminated
malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) P02AB, P0243, P0299, P1464,
P25B3, P25B4, P2AB7, P2AB8 and/or P2AB9. This may be due to an inoperative wastegate
actuator, missing wastegate actuator e-clip or non-visible damage to the actuator rod. A lower level
service component has been released, K2GZ-9G488-B for Edge/Nautilus/Escape/Corsair/Bronco
Sport vehicles and LB5Z-9G488-B for Explorer/Ranger vehicles, for service to replace the actuator,
actuator rod and both e-clips. When replacing the wastegate actuator, it is important to replace all
parts in the service kit. Turbocharger replacement is not necessary to correct the condition.

Same, dealer is now having to replace my turbo after 160 miles or so. Badlands/Manual/Sasquatch/Lux. They currently are projecting a lead time of a month for the part. It's a real bummer paying in full for a vehicle and only being able to enjoy it 1 out of the first 6 weeks of ownership. Fingers crossed @Ford Motor Company will figure out how to expedite the turbos for those of us experiencing this problem. I just called the customer service department who transferred me to parts. Neither could do anything except give me a $100 gift certificate. For a 55k truck, give me a break.

Well the waste gate is made to be used! Every once and a while get on it! I have had two other turbo charged vehicles. A 8.3 Cummins diesel pusher and Posche Cayenne twin turbo 450 plus.It is just a butterfly , like an old trottlebody. If it starts sticking due to a buildup of unburnt gas it will stick. On my diesel pushers I would hit it witha hammer to loose it up. If you try to lubercate it will burn it up and stick.

BOTTOM LINE once in a while just set you instrument side display in dashboard and get that turbo PSI up! Also it is fun but a $6.00 a gallon of gas I run in Eco on 2.3L and get 22-23 mpg, same as my Range Rover Sport cayote V8 385 hp@55 mpg. Just did 100 to get transfer case oil changed and 21mpg inckuding 15 min on the famouse LIE parking lot. Bummer!

The twin scrolled turbos are part of the exhaust manifold. One scroll is for 1-3 cylinder and other 2-4 cylinder. Okd 2.0l were single scrolled and exhaust would leak on intake strokeand loose power. Change was in turbo say 2017 or so.
If you are going to replace the turbo/ exhaust go to a bigger turbo wheels and you will get 350+hp but lover mpg not that much. Also in Europe they got 395hp in a sport car by tuning the 2.3L Keep in mind the explorer transmission is a10R60 or say 409 lb ft of torque. It will not handle a V8 output over that.A tuner in Texas dies a conversion at $100k and sells off the turbos and 10 speed 10R60 and repkaces electronic with Cayote V8 and F150 10R 80 say 600 lbft torque.

Uhm, thanks Frank, not sure what that has to do with those of us that had faulty stock turbos from the factory failing at 100 miles. But anyway...

Received the turbo assembly about a month after escalating it with ford corporate. So far so good now that its replaced. Upside for those of us with the same problem is the functional turbo is much peppier than mine before it failed. Good luck everyone.
