won't really matter since there is not enough parts to continually run 100% in any auto factory

Chatted with my friend who works at map today. I was told it’s hard enough to get people to fill 2 shifts. He didn’t think it would happen.

I agree with @ResidualGenius about the parts shortage.

I’m really shocked that the factories are having a hard time getting enough employees on board tbh. Most of my family is long gone from MI, but when we lived up there in the late 2000’s and early 2010s, people would literally fight each other over assembly line jobs.
Had a cousin (pretty new to the job, was either with the union or covered by the Union somehow) in around 2010, who was told he could either keep working or take a separation package as part of a mass-layoff.
The sep pack was $200 grand. My aunt told him that if he didn’t take that termination package and go to college or invest it all, that she’d disown him.

I was considering using some old family connections and go job hunting up there, but I don’t think moving across the country is wise any time soon.

Anyway, TLDR: I’m shocked ALs can’t hire enough people to work, considering a decade ago they were some of the most coveted jobs in the US.

This generation is not able to handle factory life like the Baby Boomers and next generation.

Seen hiring classes of 1K and a drop out rate of 50% or higher. People would walk off after first break.

The gains from a 3rd shift aren't much compared to the added cost. I've always heard the most efficient/profitable operating condition is 2 shifts with overtime. 2 shifts (8 hours) with full overtime (+2 hours) gets you to 20 hours of production before adding in 30% more costs for people and benefits for a 3rd shift. Add in part shortages until the semi conductor shortage gets resolved. I doubt a 3rd shift will be seen any time soon if ever.
