Gonzales' 1998 Deep Survival was one of the first books that kicked off my desire to pick up more skills. He's a great storyteller. Another favorite, one of the accounts from this book, is Callahan's 1986 Adrift. I don't have a lot of similar books in my library but would like more. I read the recommended Neil Strauss' 2009 Emergency, but it was more a disaster prep book than an "oops, in the wild accident" kind of book. What are some of your favorites?

It's kind of a textbook, but I've read it cover to cover and keep it on or near the nightstand (almost within arms reach) for quick reference checks.

Textbooks don't bother me one bit. My book buying/reading is at a troublesome level, and I prefer nonfiction lol

I highly recommend The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right by Atul Gawande.

It’s not a skills book per se but rather a methodology to ensure the best outcomes.

Nice topic @Laura. Over the years, these are the books and maps that my hands have touched the most. If you want to fish and hike the Catskills in New York, put these in your library!

My favorite book of all. This is a large book with artistic maps and fantastic photos that, with vivid memory, take me back to every memory I've had in the area over decades.

The Land of Little Rivers! This is the first thing you see when you open this book. This and the other maps in the book are very true to the land.

These maps are the maps to put i your backpack.

If you're a beginner in fly fishing, put this in your pocket for the first few seasons. Then go to Catskill Flies in Roscoe NY or Dette Flies in Livingston Manor for home made imitations of the bugs. These are the only people who know how to proeprly imitate these bugs for these waters. Walk in to these shops any time and you'll see them tying these flies based on what's hatching that day.

This, to some, is the devil's handbook :) This guy broke all norms and put in gps coordinates for access points to the upper Delaware river system. In honesty though, this is a big river system and this book helps get you going.

I’m partial to the Bush Craft series by Dave Canterbury. The series has a Basic and an Advanced skills book and a First-Aid book that is focused on field first-aid.
