When its in the tread like that a plug is a great option, especially on the trail! If the damage is to the sidewall, like a cut from a rock, it's probably time to grab the spare.

Well, it's better than getting a bolt in your tire like in the picture!

BTW, if that bolt is 35" you might check the other side of the tire, it may be sticking all the way through, from one side to the other.
