They are going for the repeat. This October, Shelby Hall and Penny Dale are heading back out west to defend the title they earned at last year’s Rebelle Rally.
“It’s officially official! @penny__dale & I are returning to the @rebellerally!! We are competing in the 4x4 Class with this gem,” Shelby shared on Instagram, August 19, 2021, alongside a photo of her with the Bronco.
The first women’s-only off-road navigation rally raid in the United States, the Rebelle Rally is an 8-day competition that blends the love of driving with the ultimate challenge of precise navigation. It’s not a race for speed — but a unique and demanding event based on the elements of headings, hidden checkpoints, time, and distance using maps, compass, and roadbook. Designed for 4×4 and Crossover vehicles, the Rebelle takes place on dirt roads, double tracks, trails, and sand dunes of the vast American West.
After last year’s event, Autoblog reported: “Ford's new 2021 Bronco Sport proved its mettle off the beaten path before tackling the trials and tribulations of suburban commuting. Although it's not in showrooms yet, it won first place in its category in the 2020 Rebelle Rally.”
They continued, “Organizers split the women-only event into two categories named X-Cross and 4x4. Crossovers like the Bronco Sport are lumped into the former, while SUVs fall into the latter. Shelby Hall and Penny Dale drove the Bronco Sport to victory by beating a 2020 Kia Telluride, a 202 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, a Volkswagen Touareg, plus two other Bronco Sports also sponsored by Ford. They scored 1,089 points, a result that makes them 14th overall, but their victory is impressive because the soft-roader they drove was unmodified.”
This year’s grueling eight-day adventure through the deserts of Nevada and California happens October 7-16, 2021.
